COVID-19 in Chile [SENIOR]

Dear Students:

I hope this message finds you well. Since march 19th, the total number of cases has climbed to 342, leading to multiple decisions to overcome this disease. For example, president Sebastian Piñera declared  a state of catastrophe, which began yesterday midnight. Moreover, shopping malls will be closed (some of them have been already closed) due this pandemic. This measure will be evaluated week-to-week depending on the public needs, such as clothes, pharmacies and different kinds of errands people may be likely to run.

Based on the aforementioned idea, I'd like you to make some comments following the next questions:

Questions: How can we prevent the spread of this disease? What should the government do to stop hoarding and price-gouging of necessities during the quarintine? What do you think is the main responsability of inhabitants during this pandemic?

Extension: 100-130 words

  1. Hello professor, I am Bayron Díaz, I want to start by thanking you for considering our opinions on current situations, such as those we are experiencing today.
Regarding your first and third questions, as well as the responsibilities and prevention of the spread of this virus, hygiene is essential, we know that with any virus we must abide by security measures for the well-being of our health, these being based on what we are currently experiencing, an adequate handwash; if your have to work, welet it be with a medical face mask and if possible latex gloves, if not, a pocket gel alcohol, otherwise, do not leave the house to avoid contact with the environment where many poeple breathe the same oxygen.
What the government can do is write a law, for cases such as those we are experiencing today, catastrophes or any other that affects us as a country; that this law allows a freeze on price increases, a complete closure of borders and streets, although we knew as a country the beginning of this virus, but since it was from another continent, it would stay there, by mistake we, it reached the streets of Chile spreading rapidly, so that before the arrival of this virus, there was an increase in all need against this pandemic.

    Goodbye teacher Juan

  2. Greetings.

COVID-19 is complex topic. There are so many areas involved that is not easy to take decisions. For example, a total quarantine would eventually kill the economy, but, on the other hand, freedom would eventually spread the disease.

I think, like Senior student, not like expert, that an effective solution would be agressive strategy: take COVID-19 tests in streets, public spaces (like identity check) to have a better knowledge about who is infected.

Stop the price-gouing is responsability of people. If someone sells gel alcohol to a very high price, I would not buy it, and the seller would have to reduce prices. If I was president, I would remove IVA from healthcare products.

    Hope you are well,
    Daniel Alvarado.

  3. Hello Teacher
I think that the goberment can’t prevent the covid-19 pandemic, but if you control the airports, malls and anything place in where exist numerous peoples, the goberment can control de virus covid-19.
The duty of people in this moment for prevent the virus, is stay at home, and if you don’t stay at home cover your body and stay 2 meters away from each person.
Is true that the economy will fall, but is more important the healt the all the people than the economy in this moment.
The goberment control the Price of basic elements to protect the covid-19, through the immediate delivery of free or low-cost supplies, and the goberment can increase the test of covid-19 in the different zones of country and reduce the time of the result of this.

I think that a good measure to stop the spread of the disease would be quarantine, but this would affect our economy in a bad way. I think that if the government declares total quarantine (which won’t happen because Chile values more their market than their lives), the lives that the quarantine safe will be gone by the economic crisis that will follow. So this is not a good measure. I think that the government needs to change the constitution, because set a price to the products is unconstitutional, Chile can’t intervene in the free market. I think that we should act like France (you are giant, Macron). Us (the population) should stay as we can at home and wash our hands.
By the way, here are some facts that I find relevant and the TV is not talking about it:
    - When you heal from coronavirus, you will still be spreading the virus for the next 10 days.
    - Your gel alcohol should have alcohol at least at 70° to be effective.
    - The virus can be detected on saliva and stool.
    - The surgical mask is only useful for you to no spread the disease, but droplets can penetrate the mask.
    - Surgical gloves are useless if you are going to be touching your face while using them.
    :)

  5. Hello teacher, I am constanza hernandez and I want to start talking, how to prevent the spread? Many preventative guidelines apply, such as the now-well-known concept of social distancing. But wash your hands is still the number ONE way to prevent coronavirus. Also practice good personal hygiene is crucial to prevent any respiratory illness.
It is crucial to put people before profits, at this moment. Price gouging must not be tolerated, and the government must use all tools at their disposal to prevent Chilean residents from suffering hoarding and price-gouging. The Government is responsible for enforcing a Consumer Fraud Department, which provides protections against fraudulent market practices. In addition, government is responsible of encouraging people to limit purchases to only items they need and to avoid “hoarding” items that are in high demand.
Some responsibilities of the inhabitants during this pandemic are the hygienic preventive measures in their homes, jobs or various places, and stay in their homes.

  6. Hi Teacher, how are you? I hope your are Okay and whit your´s Family
Starting we can prevent this disease by staying in our homes and trying to prevent contact with other people since COVID-19 is spread by contact. The state could control essential products, and close the airports so that no person with COVID-19 leaves or enters Chile, because if someone leaves Chile it could infect another country and the same if someone enters Chile. The main responsibility of someone in quarantine is to stay home and think of others, if you are a child and you think that nothing bad can happen to you, think of your grandmother or your parents that if something could happen to them because you infected them and if you want to go out because you think these are "vacations" please stay home. Goodgye

  7. Hello teacher

Well, i think the best way to prevent infection is to avoid exposure to the infection and follow the 5 things that the World health organization say to us:
    1. Hands: wash them often
    2. Elbow: Cough into it
    3. Face: Don't touch it
    4. Space: Keep safe sitance
    5. Home: Stay if you can

Personally, I think the government should take more drastic measures, I think that we need a a total quarantine because this could be the most efective measure.
I know that a total quarantine could seriously damage the economy, but i think the economy, it can be restored over time while the lives that are going to be lost cannot be recovered. I feel that what should matter most in this time is the life of every person.
Regarding the rise in prices, I think that in exceptional cases like this the government should set the prices that existed before the quarantine in products necessary to prevent contagion.I think that the main responsibility of inhabitants during this pandemic is stay at home and be aware of the seriousness of the situation, not be selfish and take the measures mentioned, not just for you but for everyone around you.

Unfortunately, some people can't stay home due to their jobs and risk exposing themselves to the virus and infecting more people. This is why I firmly believe that we need a total quarantine.

  9. hello teacher, sorry for the mistake.
covid-19 is spread through the air, that is, one can spread it through the eyes, breathing on contact, etc.
So the most efficient way of not catching or catching others is to stay at home only going out for things that are necessary. the government should withdraw the main expenses such as water, electricity, gas, credits and all kinds of debt that people have, they must also send everyone to their home, that is, they will not be able to go to work for that time and also have much more control over the shopping time, for example, one day a week it is allowed for a percentage of the community to shop at the nearest supermarket and the next day another percentage, so every day totally different people will buy the necessary things, another way is to give family baskets to each family in chile and each basket is made to last a month.
the work of the inhabitants is to remain in their homes and ensure the health of their relatives and theirs

  10. Hello to the best teacher in the world
In my opinion, the first thing to do to prevent these numbers from increasing is for the president to declare an extreme quarantine, something that nobody leaves the house to avoid contagion, but there is a problem with people who work and people who are street vendors who unfortunately are not making any money if they put the extreme quarantine just like some workers are being expelled from their jobs because the boss does not have to pay their wages, but that would be one of the solutions to prevent contagion (extreme quarantine ). Any person, businessmen, etc., will take advantage of these moments to increase the prices of everything, because they see it convenient only for them, and the more expensive things are sold the president earns more and he is happy while we suffer with the increase in prices because we we don't have enough wages. Our only responsibility to prevent this pandemic is to do extreme quarantine ...
    Thank you..

All this things aboout the COVID-19 Corona Virus is so difficult to talk about give a opinion, because we have to consider to much things, for example the economy, if we have total quarentine could be bad for our economy (talking about of long periods of quarentine), beacouse we are a country in ways to development, but in other way, we can study the countrys like China, South Corea, Taiwan and Singapur what they have done to stop dissemination of the COVID-19. Talking about the price-gouging, i think that the we have to take control of that (the people), because need to look where is cheaper place to buys things and thats will make than other people who sells the same but expensive, will reduce the cost oof that thing than wa want to buy.
Also talki about what can we do, like inhabitants, is stay home if you can, use sterile gloves, use face mask, if you are going outside, keep the distand with the people, use gel alcohol to wash the hands, etc.
Hoping you and your family doing fine

First thing that we have know the basic things about this virus covid-19. Propagation person to person, propagation through the contact with superficies and objects that are contaminated. As the goverment take measures to stop the virus, as we see the are not good enough, day by day we wacht the virus spreading faster than ever. Maybe we don't have to take the same measures that other countries cause, or own countries doesn't work as the same, or economy doesn't grow or fall the same, personally I don't think that total quarantine is a good idea, as my other classmate said, it will affected to our economy, but it could stop spreading the virus and will help to decrease pollution, as we all agree is a good thing. Fists of all we need to understand that Chile has the worst system of health, we don't have enough supplies, the attention in the hospital is not under protocols, people are not following the matters and instructions, they don't isolate themselves, like other things. As the goverment says we have 2,2 bed by 1000 people, obviously that is not working or is wrong information. Municipalities can't disinfect the city's. And obviously stop reading the prices of sanitary products, is an sanitary emergency, all kind of people should have the possibility of reach one of the basic sanitary product, thing that the goverment has not take care of, even in the familiar basket that the goverment give to 40 percentage of vulnerable people do not included sanitary product in general enough products to helping people. As always I'm very grateful that you to considered our personal opinion I know that's very important to you.
Hope you are well at home,

  13. Hi teacher
in my opinion the covid- 19 although it is a very complicated subject but we can avoid it in different ways, for example staying at home, being hygienic, washing hands every half hour, keeping a certain distance from people, although this must be a habit of all people not only because of the pandemic.
The government of Chile must regulate the quantity of products that people take to their homes and on the increase in prices the sellers abuse the situation and raise the prices although the buyer will not buy since the price will be very high and the seller will be practically forced to lower prices.
the main responsibility of each person is to stay at home and respect quarantine

  14. Hello teacher, I am Benjamín Mercado,To start I think that the measures that the president and the minister have taken have not been entirely wrong, but I feel that it should be more strict in this, to have people who are on the street, be it military or others doing controls, in addition to isolation Of the possible infected, the price of sells gel alcohol is a problem and they should freeze prices, the main problem is to think that it is only a lethal disease for our grandparents, because this disease affects everyone differently and They do not take the real importance of this disease, which is a worldwide pandemic.
Hoping you and your family doing fine, Goodbye teacher

I think a good way to stop the spread of the disease is to avoid exposure. As much as we decree quarantine (which in Italy is not giving good results) I feel it depends on the person, caring for oneself not to leave his house and not to be infected. At first I think the government is doing things very badly, but at first I feel it is because of our constitution. I think that price fixing for products is a despicable thing and that the test has a price too, all this must be changed. What we must do in this pandemic as inhabitants, is to take precautions, as I said above not getting infected depends on one.
    - I would also like to point out that there are currently 729,000 infected worldwide :(

  16. Hello teacher, I am Daniel Mercado.
The covid-19 is a complicated subject, personally I think that a good measure would be the mandatory quarantine at the national level, avoiding contact with other people beyond the family with which one lives.
I think that the government should put a limit on purchases according to the number of people who live in the same house and I really don't know if the government can do something about the prices of certain things but if possible put a maximum price.
The main responsibility is to stay at home and take care of themselves, so that if someone is infected, they will prevent the virus from spreading further and that would already be a common good.
    Hoping you are well.
    Good bye teacher.

  17. Hi Professor, I'm Moses Leiva and this is what I think about the questions.
    1. First, to prevent the spread of this virus, we should stay in our homes, since the virus can only be spread by contact between an infected person and a non-infected person. Second, it is to wash our hands repeatedly, as this prevents the spread of bacteria and the virus itself.
    2. What the government must do to stop hoarding and price theft is to support the people, with resources and money, both the higher class and the more vulnerable sectors.
Also, it is the support to the big companies, since with the propagation of the virus, the economy has decreased, which as consequence is the increase of the products, which the government has to give more support so that the economy of our country stays stable.
    3. The main responsibility of the inhabitants is to stay in their homes as long as possible and keep an adequate hygiene.

  18. Hi Teacher!, Bayron Pavón here!
The Covid-19 is a complicated theme, so i answer the questions.
a form of prevent the covid-19 is respect the quarantine and get out just in emergency moments, the government should set a purchase limit for some emergency health products. the responsibility of the citizen is to prevent diseases by having adequate hygiene in addition to staying at home and taking the necessary precautions to prevent this virus. This virus has affected us all, either directly or indirectly, but we must put each one to move forward and have everything necessary to continue with our normal lives, I hope that all this ends soon.
    This is my answer!!
    Bye teacher!

  19. Hi teacher
In my opinion the Covid-19 is a very deadly virus for Chile, because in this country the most of the population is older, and the virus mostly affects old people.
For me, one method of preventing a pandemic is to avoid going out to crowded places and stay in home, i believe that being at home we could prevent the virus from spreading, then do a Good cleaning of the environmene, mainly the places where more people gather.
For the second question, mean the government need to stop the Price increase, and change the constitution or make a new law for the prices in cases of catastrophes or a pandemic, how is it now for example.
And for the third question, the main responsability of the inhabitants during the pandemic is to stay in home, in order to take careo f other, staying at home helps the reduce the leve of spread.
    Stay In Home
Good Bye teacher, see you later.

The Covid-19 is something we have to prevent or keep the virus and not spread more, now is our priority. answer the questions

1.We can prevent the virus stay in the home, if need out the home, is recommend have the one person in charge, this person is only can go to the supermarket, and everythat. with this measure prevent more people infected with the Covid-19

2.the government should controled the how many objets can you have or buy in the supermarked or everyplace where you can buy something, if this go well, the government can prevent something more importan of the quarantine, the government can prevent the panic and this is more important

3.The most important in the pandemic is keep the calm and stay in home

First, the best way to prevent the spread of this virus, it´s a total quarantine, but that is not possible. Is not possible because it would bring negative consequences from the economy of the entire country, and a country like Chile will not be able to solve them. So, as the essential works for the economy must continue, it is a duty on the part of the government to guarantee the best hygiene measures for the workers of these jobs, measures like masks, virus tests, etc.. With this, the virus prevention is made more efficient, and greater problems for the future economy are avoided.
Regarding to the third question, the inhabitant have two essential duties. The first one is, obviously, to respect the quarantine and stay at home. The second, is to keep a good hygiene for the entire duration of the quarantine.
Hoping you and your family doing fine

  23. Hello teacher!
well, in my opinion, i think that covid-19 is a complicated issue, because for can to prevent the virus from spreading, as a first step would be to make a total quarantine, but this also is hard, so, the people can take measures of hygiene, for example, washing the hands constantly, wearing mask, promote social distancing, etc. On the other hand, the rise in hygiene products, I think it was excessive, because it is an emergency situation and we all have the right to access the products and unfortunately there are people who cannot access the high costs. Finally, The main responsibility of the inhabitants is that those who can stay in quarantine in their homes and those who have to work take all the necessary measures to avoid contagion.
greetings, I hope you are well.

  24. Hello teacher, I'm Benjamin Solis
I hope that you are well at home with your family.
well to this date we exceed 2000 and it is still going on and we all know that sooner or later some of our family members will get or die from this virus, if this did not happen before, and we all know that the virus will continue to advance, so we have to put on our part in staying at home, being clean, not making physical contact with people we don't know and going out for important things and this is the best method that we Chileans and the whole world can do so that this does not continue and let the authorities hope the virus becomes good.
what the government should do is that the people don't buy too much, how? good venezuela in their country they have a limit of purchase and to buy they must put the mark then that is saved in the system and if that person buys the same thing again it will not be possible because he already made that purchase, and in high prices the government I should put fines for those prices because people do not buy alcohol, gel alcohol, chlorine and I enter other useful items because they want to, they buy them because of the virus, so supermarkets take advantage of this to make a profit, which is very bad and reaches shame of others.
Well, as I said before, we should all do our part by staying on our own if we can and leaving when it is for important things like buying bread, medicine or to have food, but when doing this, only one person should do it. whole family to buy because it is less risky for the family.
and if you cannot stay at home because they must work, take all possible measures such as using face masks, alcohol gel, etc.
I hope to see you soon teacher, bye.

  25. Good afternoon teacher Juan, I hope you are at your house waiting for the quarantine to end.
To begin, I will clarify that in my opinion, Chile could not prevent the arrival of COVID-19, but it could prevent it from spreading further through our territory.
As a country, the first thing we should have done is to freeze all debts and the prices of hygiene items, this because the merchants raised all prices too much.
Now, if we talk about our duties as people, it is to stay in our houses, and thus prevent the spread of the virus and infections
I hope to see us in the near future teacher

  26. Hello teacher.
It is always better to prevent than to cure and in order to do so we must stay in our homes to avoid contagion, in addition to the fact that we will avoid buying cleaning products that are currently so very expensive and something that the government must punish for the money abuse exercised by the market, however we have to take responsibility for what we have created as human beings, the pandemic the planet didn’t throw away for not taking care of it. We must be aware that the planet is dying and we must take care of it, we must be responsible and we must stay at home, we shouldn't go out if it's not necessary and take care of those at risk against Covid-19.

  27. Hi Teacher! I hope you and your family are healthy and safe.
First of all, the most effective way to avoid the spread of this the quarantine or social isolation. Also wash our hands and avoid physical contact. I think our government is trying to avoid something that is unavoidable. The economic crisis is going to happen anyways. Why? Because yes, if people stop working now and Chile uses their resources in order to guarantee their needs, the economy will be afected for a while until the pandemic is solved, then most of the employees will be healthy and ready to start again. But if otherwise people wont stop working and they have no guarantee of their salary or their medical justification. They will get sick and also people around them. It ends in a collapse of the health system and also an economic crisis that is way more difficult to solve. Because you have no healthy people. The Chilean constitution is also something important because due to its parameters is not possible to give the citizens social protection against these kind of situation. It is inconstitutional to freeze prices of primordial products in these times such as alcohol gel, etc. For now, only we can protect ourselves. Our main obligation is to stay home as much as we can and also have emphaty. Do not go to the supermarket and buy as much as you can. Just buy what you will need for the next months. And do not judge if someone is not home. Because there is people that need to work everyday to live.

    Stay safe!
Sorry if I wrote too may words. I got inspired.

  29. Hello teacher, the actual situation of this disease in our country it's complicated, like you know Chile is one of the most affected countries in South America, at this time we are facing almost 2.500 cases and 8 deaths. Due to the fast spread and his danger, the main priority has been prevent the new infections, because it doesn't exist any medicament to cure this illness, so our best weapon to fight back against the pandemic is the prevention and self care, for example some of the measures that can help us are hold a distance of 1 meter between each person in public spaces, constantly wash your hands with soap and stay at home and go out only if it's necessary. The hoarding and the price gouging are such a big problem for inhabitants, if this situation grows, the government must take very strong measures, like establish a reasonable limit on the purchases of essential supplies, for the price gouging the government should freeze the prices under certain parameters and regulate the black markets that could rise. Our main responsibility as citizens is the empathy, In dark times like this, when you don't see a single spark of light, when you don't even know what would happen tomorrow, we must be emphatic, look whoever is in front of you and think how our decisions will affect the others, to end this I call to heeding the recommendations that gives the authorities and experts, we need to be conscious be, responsible and follow the measures that the government will take, together we can overcome this disease.

  30. Hello Teacher, at the moment the most alarming thing is the contagion of the Covid-19 even reaching a closure by oneself or imposed by the government, although this sounds like a viable solution for a relatively short time, the real problem is that people do in these times, we have heard many times that people keep going out to the streets as if nothing happened and in the most alarming cases that the same infected people go out to public places and without any type of protection leaving this confinement useless; I think that the vast majority believe that both the government and the health ministry are not doing what is necessary, or rather willingly, in the face of all this, even if multiple options could be given to stop either the increase in prices or even to maintain a stable quarantine, the government would not listen to these prayers; the only thing that people have to do to protect themselves is to be at home and if they need to go out, only one person should go and that they should also be well protected and that when interacting with other people be cautious, that is the main thing All this; Perhaps this sounds somewhat aggressive or somewhat impulsive, but at the moment it is necessary to take precautions and be open-eyed at what the government is doing in the face of what is happening; Gabriel Viscay says goodbye.

  31. Hello teacher, I am Alejandro Balbontin. In my opinion, what you have to do is educate people on how the virus can spread and how to avoid it, also close public spaces so that many people do not get together in the same place.

My opinion is quite extreme but what I think is that the government should pay for basic services such as water and electricity, and distribute food by doing so, people would not have the need to leave their homes in the case of merchants who make orders to domicile as well as food services such as restaurants so the price in food would not change as much since they would have to maintain or lower the price so that people continue buying.

keep your hands clean and try not to leave your houses to avoid spreading the virus

  32. Hi teacher.
Covid-19 is a complex subject to take into account considering it started recently and in a continent far from ours. Moreover, we haven’t given importance that it would eventually arrive to Chile until it was announced on the news. I must pinpoint that we never thought this unknown pandemic came back again since the last century. As human beings, we were very careless for not being able to have the necessary resources for everyone. Now that we are under strict lockdown aside the social crisis from 2019 that still seems to be present among Chilean citizens. What can the government against hoarding and price-gouging in quarantine? I believe that there is no need to set a price or have a price freezing law since not everyone has the necessary resources, whether they do not get their salary or unfortunately lost their jobs, what would be plausible is that they somehow distribute face masks or provide help and assistance to those in need, so that they might not need to go out and keep on spreading this disease. What is the main responsibility that people must fulfill with this? It would be the concern or responsibility that you have to have, whether you believe it or not since it's alarming overall.
